API - Application Programming Interface
Programmable interface, used by a programmer for adapting applications via standardized
function procedures
ASP - Active Server Pages
Server side concept for dynamic websites
AVL - Automatic Vehicle Location
Automatic vehicle location, e.g. with GPS
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to transfer data. Data is sent over freely accessible
frequencies (between 2,402 and 2,480 " gigahertz"). Devices establish contact independently if
they're within a range of up to 10 meters (amplified up to 100 meters). Every Bluetooth device is
both globally and uniquely identifiable, so one can adjust which other devices it is able to
communicate with
CF (Compact Flash) Storage Card
Small, inexpensive, removable mass storage device used in digital cameras, notebooks and PDAs
COM- Port
Interface on a computer, e.g. the mouse port
DACH
Abbreviation for Germany, Austria and Switzerland
EMEA
Abbreviation for "Europe, Middle East and Africa". Term used in economics in correlation with
technical and economical developments/stages in these countries
GPRS - General Packet Radio Service
GPRS is an extension of the Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) - standard for faster data
transfer. Data is transformed into separate packets, which are sent separately and put back
together when the recipient receives them. Consequently the data line is used for only a short
period of time, the time it takes to send a packet. Thus, with GPRS, a higher use of existing
capacities is possible
GPS - Global Positioning System
GPS is a worldwide navigation system, which is operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, not only
for military but also for civil use.
Twenty-four satellites orbit the earth and continually send signals, which are received by
the GPS device and used for navigation. At least three satellites are required to determine the
exact position
GSM - Global System of Mobile Communication
Technical standard for digital data transfer
GUI - Graphic User Interface
Design of the user interface. Various user interface designs (see also skins) can be downloaded
from the internet to individually style a PDA screen, for example
Galileo
European satellite navigation system, currently being developed which will "go live" in 2008. It
will be more efficient and safer than the U.S. GPS system and thus allows more precise navigation
HSTC - Homeland Security Technology Corporation
Previous company name of Destinator Technologies (until 2005)
Hardreset / Hardware Reset
The PDA is reset to its factory settings. All data (documents, additionally installed programs,
personal settings) that haven't been saved elsewhere (e.g. storage card) will be lost. A hardreset
is all so caused by a completely discharged battery
Java
Platform independent (independent of a specific operating system, e.g. Microsoft) programming
language
MRE - Major Roads of Europe
In addition to the map of a country, every Destinator CD is equipped with the main roads of Europe
network. CD changes are not necessary if one stays abroad
NMEA - National Marine Electronics Association
Data protocol for GPS data transfer. NMEA is the most common GPS protocol. GPS records are needed
to synchronize GPS receiver and software on Pocket PC
OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer
Manufacturers who purchase parts from other manufacturers and after prior agreement sell these
under their own name as so-called OEM-versions
Offboard
Navigation with Smartphone. Map data is saved on a server and is sent to the Smartphone as and when
required. Route calculation occurs via the server as well
Onboard
Navigation with Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and GPS antenna. The opposite of offboard. Data is
saved directly on the PDA and route calculation occurs on the PDA as well
PDA - Personal Digital Assistant
Small, portable computer. Also used as address book, appointment calendar etc.
PDF - Portable Document Format
PDF is a data format, which is able to transfer data which is usually printed. Can, however, only
be produced or read using special software (e.g. Acrobat Reader from Adobe)
POI - Points of Interest
Places which are interesting for tourists. Such as hotels, museums, restaurants, gas stations, bank
machines, etc.
RDS - Radio Data System
Non-audible signals, transferred via VHF (very high frequency) to transfer text information such
as traffic information
SD (Secure Digital) Memory Card
A small mobile memory medium which was developed to cope with increased output, capacity, safety
and demands
SDK - Software Development Kit
A software tool to create company specific navigation solutions. New individual software can be
created and existing company software can be integrated into Destinator software
SiRF
As with NMEA, SiRF is a data protocol. SiRF is actually the name of a company (SiRF Technology).
It's important not to mix up SiRF with NMEA since SiRF can only be used when using a SiRF- receiver
Skin
Design of user interface. One can download different user interface designs from the Internet to
create an individual style for the PDA
Softreset/ Software Reset
A softreset allows a PDA to be restarted without the loss of data. This is sometimes necessary
after driver installation or after a system crash. This is normally carried out by pushing a button
on the side of the PDA with the stylus. You can find more detailed information in your PDAs user
manual since this action varies from PDA to PDA
TJ - Traveller's Journal
Driver's log. Function: to record length and purpose of a journey
TMC - Traffic Message Channel
Pan-European determined standard, which is broadcast parallel to the RDS signal. Graphic
information via TMC can be displayed together with text information
Toll road
Turnpike: Road where you are required to pay to use it
VAR - Value-Added Reseller
A VAR is someone who resells a product (adapted or original)
WLAN - Wireless LAN
WLAN stands for "Wireless Local Area Network". In this context one also speaks about "Wi Fi"
(Wireless Fidelity). Wi Fi is a seal, which a dealer gets on his product, if it has passed the
interoperability test
